EMS 805:
Advanced Research Methodology (3cr)
Students will be instructed
in the theoretical schools of thought that are relevant to
social science research. The course will focus on the
appropriate use of qualitative and quantitative research
designs. This course aims at developing students’
skills to reflect upon scientific working, develop a
research design, carry out critical source studies,
conceptualize qualitative interviews, gather data, manage
the information and analyze the results critically.
This course is designed to guide students through the
research process. It is an operational and gradual type of
coursework. At the end of this course, it is expected that
students will be able to conduct a research project by
defining a research problem, setting the research
questions, assumptions, hypotheses and independent and
dependent variables; conducting literature review;
collecting data (by one or more of the collection methods
such as observation, participant-observation, intensive
interviewing, comparative, historical, case study, focus
group, survey); analyzing the data collected (by following
the data analysis methods such as content analysis,
econometrics, statistical software packages such as SPSS,
SAS, and other qualitative and quantitative methods); and
summing up the research results and the conclusion.
